There's something enjoyable about drawing a slew of characters smooshed together, all with their own minds, all doing their own thing. I did it once with Babies, but none of them were really interacting. I ought to revisit the crowd scene concept again. It's kinda fun. With more time, perhaps.
On the subject of interaction, the original was just a show of headshots, but I thought that wasn't involved enough. Not quite enough character, per se. Character pinups are cool, and I'll always love them, but I like to tell a story, however brief and simple. I sketched all nine kids' faces before jumping into the main piece and imbue them with their own persona. One of them stood out to me as high-strung and whiny, so I made him the crying one. There was a huggable teddy bear kind of person and a stern one as well as others, so I could choose where to place them better than if I'd just made them up on the fly.
While I do like the piece itself, I like the concept behind it more. Some of these kids look okay. That serious boy to the right of the crying boy, the crying boy himself, and the double-bun peeking girl are executed well enough. But everywhere else is less than well done, I feel. Proportions are slightly off, lines a wee bit sloppy, some parts in need of another pass. For instance, some of them have fingers and some don't. Not the best finish, but the feel from this pic is lighthearted and fun.
Thanks for reading~
