Just a really simple, light-hearted piece. I never found the original, but the concept of this piece was fleshed out in an old sketch. I don't like kids much, but I do find their simplistic mentality very amusing at times. This "effective" hide-and-seek player stems from that.
The scene is oriented a bit high. But other than that, this piece is a positive for me. I talk about value contrast a lot (perhaps too much), but it's done quite well here. Not just in the striped pants, but in the more concentrated shadows, like the one under his left (our right) arm, the reflective-ish looking shadow on the base of the lamp, and the shadow running down the back of the striped pants. It's more than just shading, it sells volume, creates depth.
On the cons' side, I wish I'd done the lampshade differently. How, I'm not sure. The ink certainly spreads the balance of black value. I think that's all it does. In fact, I'm not sure what it's supposed to be doing. The harsh cast shadow would seem to suggest that the light is on, but there's no indication of light coming from the lightbulb. The ink is so dark, it looks more like the pattern of the lampshade than an inner glow. I might lose the balance, but were I to do this again, I'd do the shade in pencil. Not as dark but more ability to do a convincing inner glow.
This kid's hair looks like a lot like that kid's from Day 3: Bait.
Thanks for reading~
