The original picture was supposed to be a cat character I have sitting on a dog character I have. But when it came down to it, right down to the moment when I had to do the sketch, I just didn't want to draw cat sitting on top of a dog.
It helps to have backup subjects. For the same story, I have a small collection of monsters, some simple, some complex. And the simplest of them (and incidentally, two of the better ones) are the ghost and the slime. They're easy to draw and easy to make do things. And given the content of the image, it's fitting that they look so similar.
All my ghosts are blank-faced, and it amused me to imagine the dead-eyed (hah) spectre attempting to court a slime. Also, there's something humorous to me about a monster being scared of another monster.
This pic is nice. I like it quite a bit. The composition is balanced, the line variation is quite... varied. One can really feel the weights of all the elements. Though I wish the lines would be more different. Had the ghost's lines been even finer, it would have sold the ethereal nature of that particular monster. Likewise, had the slime's lines been heavier, it would have looked more substantial compared to the hopeful ghost.
Somehow, during the sketching phase, the slime's expression could not work. Nothing was working. Every expression fell flat, felt stiff, or was flat-out too weak. But then in the final lineart phase, it came out just fine, so I don't know what that was all about.
Thanks for reading~
