I first learned to do denim textures when I drew a comic years and years ago. That kinda loose crosshatching that fades and becomes looser has long been a favorite of mine to employ. It's not remotely revolutionary. I just like doing it.
An empty picture. This time, I wanted it to be that way. I wanted it to feel like a calm winter scene. Funny thing is, it hadn't snowed yet when I drew this. So, what with the snow slowing the outside world down, it feels like an appropriate portrait of now.
I like the roughness of this picture. It might be the mix of different inking techniques and pencil shading. The line value balances out well. The thin lines within the sweater, the thicker ones surrounding it. Looking at it now, actually, they're surprisingly clean.
This is mostly focused on the character, however. The rest of the setting is alright. I wish I had more separation of the background, mid-ground, and foreground. It would have made the depth-of-field more convincing. This was originally meant to be on toned paper. I have far better control on white paper, but maybe the toned paper, with the help of white charcoal, would have made for a much brighter winter scene.
You know, I've never truly liked hot chocolate. I like the idea of hot chocolate. It's a symbol of warmth and coziness and all that jazz. But whenever I make it, I'm disappointed. Always too... something, I don't know. I'll probably keep trying. It's like lobster. I don't like it, but I really wanna like hot chocolate.
Thanks for reading~
