Secret Friend

Illustration done with HB/4H pencils on 4.5 x 6.5 white cardstock.

And the quality just bounces back.

There's a wide emptiness here. Intentional. I wanted it to be just the two of them. I wanted it to feel for them and us that they were the only ones on the dock. Or wharf. Or pier or whatever it is. But I like the way it's rendered as well as the way the emotion it presents. Both girls are rendered well, I feel, but the human girl's face is particularly nice, and I like her poofy hair. Plus, I like how her face actually shows up. Sometimes, whether it's greyscale or not, very dark skin can eat up facial details. Not here, though, so I'm a glad glad~ The degree to which we can see through the water is also nice. Helps balance out upside-down bowl sky. Oh, and the clouds across the horizon. Legitimately forgot they were there until I noticed just now.

What issues do I have? Well, while I like how the water balances out the empty sky, it's a bit bland. No fish, no little plants. Nothing. Outside of the stakes and her tail, nothing is in the water, and it looks a bit... I dunno. Maybe it's not as bad as all that. Speaking of the mergirl, her ears are too thin. Or "ear," since we only see the one. Either way, it makes her look like she's wearing some kind of alien headset.

Oddly enough, I don't have much to say about this one that I haven't said already. As I've said before on Instagram, the original pic was intended to be silly and/or fantastical. But, as is my want, I was in a mood when I was sketching this out, so the scene became somber or, at the very least, a touch more morose than what I'd originally intended. I had, however, always envisioned them as two girls. The water, which appears to be open water, was a lake at first, a lake surrounded by forest. Like some kind of elven woodland thing.

All things considered, I like this picture a lot. I would have liked to see what the woodland lake scene looked like, but the open water look is just as good.

Thanks for reading.
