Squeeze
Illustration done with HB/3B/4H pencils on 4.5 x 6.5 white cardstock.
It was a very interesting idea but not presented as well as it could have been... Hmm... This season of "Good Idea, Bad Execution" is really heating up...
The use of the grounds (fore-, mid-, and back-), or at least the attempt to do so, is evident here. I recall wanting to create the effect of peeking through the rocks to see this unfortunate site. The issue is the vantage point. We're too high up and not zoomed in enough. The rocks barely occupy any of the real estate of the image. They don't frame the subject. They're just sort of there. Had the rocks been taller (and darker), they would have been a much better frame for the struggling merperson.
Not sure why I wanted to do a pollution theme here. I know I wanted to draw a merperson struggling beneath a large, immovable something. Somehow, it became an oil drum. Somehow, some tires went into the background. And somehow, those rocks showed up. I think my train of thought was that the merperson was to be trapped at the bottom of the ocean. If he's at the bottom of the ocean, there's probably lots of pollution, so tires, right? Those can holder things, a random piece of paper of some sort. I guess...? I don't know.
I dislike this one. Not strongly, but yeah. I don't like this. It's a bit less than average from me. I'd give it a 4 out of 10.
Thanks for reading.
