Illustration done with HB/4H pencils, black Prismacolor pencil, and watercolor pencils (orange, yellow, and blue) on 4.5 x 6.5 white cardstock.

Today on "Good Idea, Bad Execution..."

I don't know what it is with me and those black Prismacolors. I've used other Prismacolors to decent effect, so it's not like I don't know what I'm doing with the brand at all. It's just the black ones, apparently, that I am using ineffectively. I've seen them used to fair effect for creating very dark areas much deeper than what even a 9B might do. It's a good ink substitute. BUT if you don't know what you're doing, it's basically drawing with a potato. In other words, as preposterous as it is useless.

I feel the issue may be not only my lack of experience but also the lack of a sharp pencil point. Honestly, can't remember the last time I sharpened them.

The idea was to have a contrast in styles. There's a primitive child's picture done in color in the background and far more rendered, black-and-white child in the foreground. The idea comes across here. Or at least I think it does. It would further separate the two. Seeing as they're both drawn by me, the change in color and level of rendering between the planes was paramount to make the whole thing work. The execution was clear enough to show what the intent was, so that's good. But the quality of the execution is of questionable quality.

It's decent enough to be getting on with, but I don't quite like it. If I do a digital version, it will be, God willing, far better than this.

Thanks for reading.
