Clubbing WIP - Scenery

Originally when I started "Clubbing" (hah), I had an elaborate setup with lots of different scenes and backgrounds. It was going to be... funny? It would interesting at the very least, I would hope, at any rate.

But here's the thing.

See, when I do the process of flatting, I often flip through the comic as it comes together, reordering panels and anticipating newer ones. And dumping ones that bog down the progression of the story. That setup showing all those backgrounds did just that: bog the whole thing down. I'd already inked them, but not much would be lost. I just scrapped them. Here's what's left.

This is the background for the first town we see Jay and Sheriff approach. This, and all the others, have these blocks of color set down for clipping masks. Whenever I get to those...

I was taking from mid-century background designs where it concerns trees. I like the way they sit on the horizon. But them buildings, though... I don't dislike them, per se... But they're not as good as they could be.

The second background Jay and Sheriff approach.

Now, this building is much nicer. I'm especially a fan of that fence and how some of the slats are loose. As I write this post, it occurs to me that I could just do a palette swap. Not only would it save time, it goes even more in line with the video game theme. You seen all those palette swaps in RPGs? We'll see, we'll see.

The weapon shop front from which Jay and Sheriff exit.

The lineart will likely remain the same for both shops they leave, though the color scheme is subject to change. Something simple may go into the background of this shot. Imagine that. The background of a background.

The weapons counter inside the weapons shop.

That price tag will have varying amounts of $'s as the story demands: $, $$, $$$, and $$$$.

The wider shot of the weapons shop.

The sword is just there to further emphasize that this is a weapon shop. The banner will have pictures of whatever each town is based on to help differentiate them. Similarly, each shop will be colored somewhat differently.
