As you can see from the Navigator on the lower right part, the first thing done was creating a solid block of grey down Billy ('cause that's his name). It's good for setting up the basic areas of light and shadow. From here, I can much more easily pick which places I want to leave pushed back in darkness or pulled forward into the light.

Eyes are a very important highlight (hah) here, so for things like this, I'd usually put plenty of light in them. Gives them a little bit of life to let the eyelids cast a tiny shadow of the tops of them.

After dealing with the face and hair, I added shadows from clothing wrinkles and shadows where Billy's arms. That candle, too. I think. Honestly, I don't remember the exact order I did this process, but that sounds like me, I guess. Face, hair, body, miscellaneous...

Only one color. I only wanted one color. Frankly, I've been wanting to do something challenging, dramatic, and really different with my work lately. Been really wanting to up my game. I don't know how this qualifies as "challenging" or "dramatic," but it certainly is different than my usual fare. And it certainly picked a different part of my brain to do this piece. As of now, I'm happy with this piece.
