Mandarin WIP - Balancing Shadows

The initial shadow I put down, while nice in its own way, was far too dark. It would become overwhelming in large amounts. Plus, the heavy shadow looks slightly ominous. I mean, I don't like kids, but I don't want to make them look spooky.
As I may have mentioned yesterday, the point of the image was to draw your eye into Gretchen and her hair. By having the shadow so dark and prominent, it becomes a feature on its own and draws attention to itself. And away from the main focus. A much lighter shadow is much better. Much.
I used a light gray on Multiply layers to do the shading. Of course, using gray for shading creates rather lifeless shadows, but it's just for establishing values. Later stages will get a slight hue. Besides, the gray is part of a color palette I made, so it's easier to just use that.
