Now that hair baby from yesterday was a much simpler fix compared to today's subject here.
The first stage is from my initial pencils. That's the basic idea I had for this boy, but for whatever reason, I never liked mouth. When I went to inking, I changed his face entirely. In addition to still not liking the mouth, now I didn't like the eyes, either. I thought maybe he'd look better if he looked like he were in mid-yawn. I like the expression (the third one) he came out with, but it was... weird. It made him look old and even a little creepy. Don't even think I waited to change it again.
The problem, I think, was the shape of his head. It's asymmetrical. In addition, it would seem to imply that his jaw is slack and off to his right while his left eyebrow is raised. This would seem to imply dozing or else catching someone just as they doze. That's what I did for the fourth picture. Still, it looked very much like he was struggling to see, like he needed glasses. It wouldn't work. But I realized I could fight the asymmetry of his head by turning his face.
Finally, I landed on the fifth picture. Not only was it less flat, it didn't look unbalanced or awkward. In time, I drooped the eyes and moved the eyebrows in opposition to each other. Also the snot and drool.
It's odd. When you see a picture, that's it. That's the picture. You don't often see the trial and error that goes into it. This was such a bear, I don't imagine I'll forget it any time soon.
