Mandarin WIP - Concept and Inking Progress

Stepping away from strictly comics, here's a piece I started working on.

This piece is based on a concept I find rather creepy. No, not the sprawl of babies, though if you're like me and don't like children, it's bad enough. No, it's the staging concept. A sea of people all going about their business except for one individual who is looking directly at us. Not sure why I think that's creepy, but it is... People looking at me from a removed plane such as from behind windows, reflected in mirrors, in pictures... Spooky stuff.

Anyway, the other thing was based on was using color for contrast and to guide the eye. The remainder of the image will be browns and blacks. The hair of the creepy baby is, however, starkly orange.

There are over a dozen babies here. I don't know why, but I thought that it would take just an hour or so to do the inking. Nope. Takes around 10 minutes to ink each baby. That's not even accounting for the two hours it took to clean up the artwork. I suppose we'll just see how it goes.

It was a bit of a challenge to make all the faces different. I still don't think they're quite different enough.

Also, "Mandarin" is not actually the name of the color. It's from a list of colors for which I did not know the name, so I just titled them whatever word I associated with them.
