You Found a POTION! WIP - Process of the Background

The several stages I went through for the background in "You Found a POTION!"

The first one you've already seen. It's the lines over the purple pencils. Nothing special.

The second one is more interesting, or at least I feel so. Clipping masks make coloring so much easier. Whatever you roll down as a clipping mask acts like one of those fancy Crayola art pads with the accompanying art tools: your art will only show up on top of the art pad and not on the desk or the rug or Mom's couch. That also meant that I can pretty much chuck any color I want at it. It's getting covered up, anyway. I was looking at blue things; can't remember if it was a forest colored with blues or the collection of blues for a color palette I made, but it was blue, anyway. So I decided it might be fun to color the masks in blue and bluish greens. Looks kinda cool. Looks kind of like a really bad Dr. Seuss knockoff, but still. NEXT!

The third one is the "actual" set of flats. This pass also takes depth and lighting into account to an extent. I prefer warmer greens and browns, so I gravitate to those. But I did take some cues from the Seuss, Medical Professional version. Smaller plants are blue-green, and the inner forest is a dark teal. Of course, more trees would (hah, wood) have to be added in said inner forest, but this is good enough to be getting on with. Moving on...

The fourth one is during the last of the many, many, many lighting/shading passes. There are now trees in the inner forest. We have an idea of the time of day. I mentioned that I prefer warm colors, so I put a reddish-brown overlay over the whole thing. Some of the shading is still missing. It's also a bit more intense than I wanted. But yeah. Here it be.

The fifth on is the final representation of the background. The lighting is softer, but the biggest difference is that the background is much bigger. The background was resized around the tree stump, really, since it's an integral set piece. The odd thing is the majority of the background, including most of my favorite elements like the big gnarled tree root and that white tree that looks like a hand, are simply never seen...

Holy moly, I just realized it's Thursday, not Friday. I just gained a day~!
