The thumbnails for Page 5.

I still don't know quite how I feel about compositing things in Photoshop. That's what this pacing will have me do. I'll have to stick Jay next to Sheriff in post as well as stick her in all the backgrounds. I'll have to put one of the town backgrounds behind them, too, now that I think about it. Doesn't bother me when other people do it. On the contrary, I find it fairly fascinating, seeing people stitch together different pieces into a whole in their art program of choice. No, it's me. I personally feel a bit odd about it. I'll keep doing it, sure. It's a useful technique and it's great for very specific types of humor.

But... maybe it's a leftover feeling from being a beginner artist (as if I moved out of that range...), but it feels like I'm cheating somehow. I've read Peanuts. Charles Schulz drew those characters in almost identical copies in four-panel strips. I know it can be done. I just can't do it as of now, and frankly, I don't think I'll ever try to reach that level since it's not something that really interests me. And anyways, old Disney animators reused animation cels. Yeah, that's animation, not comics, but the practice of recycling art that's still good is a tried and true method. I drew it. I own it. Might as well get the most out of it. There's that crisis resolved and averted. Glad we had this talk. Still though...

For some reason, all these backgrounds put me in the mood to draw a bar with a lot of character. Might not even put anyone in it. I just want to draw a bar.

And for some reason, I always pictured that last scene happening near a carnival. Specifically one with a great big Ferris wheel. Why is that???

AHH. I know why. I think. The pacing of the "harsh and sullen Jay" joke reminded me of that Valentine's Day episode of "SpongeBob SquarePants," which took place mainly at a fair/carnival. In all honesty, while that episode occurred to me while I was working on that very similar joke in "Clubbing," I did not, in fact, get the idea directly from the episode. I thought of it myself. Maybe I was subconsciously thinking of it, but I didn't set out to write the same joke. That would just be silly. In retrospect, I feel it's actually so similar, I may need to go back and edit it a bit more. I don't mind that the brand of humor (disgruntled person staying in a single position despite being shown in multiple locations) is the same. It's that now that I'm recalling the episode, I'm finding that some of the pacing is nearly identical. That's no bono...

And that's that. After this, it's all about the final pencils before I move out of the traditional work and onto the digital stuff.

Thanks for reading~
