The backgrounds for "A Simple Escort Mission" are very different from those in "The Explorers." Whereas those were meant to set the scene and create an atmosphere, these are partially meant to further communicate/accentuate the visual style of the characters but honestly, they're mostly there just to have something there.
True, the elements in the backdrop, including the colors that will come later, God willing, suggest where this place may or may not be, but that's about it. There are only a handful of different backdrops. The backdrop of the first shot with Jay pointing at Bindhi's feet is reused for, I dunno, five, six, or seven or so additional panels. The cartoon itself ended up resembling an animatic, and I, in turn, ended up just running with that, but it serves to show that the backdrops here are mostly there simply to fill show were they are. The viewpoint/camera angle does not change quite as often as in "The Explorers," and the characters stay in the same place a lot, so there's no need to have a particularly dynamic camera.
