The backgrounds in "The Explorers" are meant to be, while not realistic, detailed and immersive, if that's the right word. It communicates depth and texture. Had I been a better background person, they would also communicate a subtle bit of character. For the most part, however, they're meant to be a set piece.
In most adventure-style RPGs, the world is broken up into specific areas: forests, towns, plains, caves, etc. Different areas pose different challenges, enemy mobs, and what is the most relevant for this particular comic, different music. This comic is very much a beta test for how the style of however these comics are going to play out. Given the basis for inspiration is video game-related stuff, it might be stylistically appropriate to play a different track in each area these three explore. Possibly even a different track given each new situation, as well some other editing goodies. This is gonna be fun.
