One of the many benefits of putting flat colors and lighting effects on completely separate layers is that it's much easier to create effects. Not particularly fancy effects, but things like the process above.
I've almost entirely stopped using pure white when I can. I think the only times I use straight white is for the mask lens of those people from Overcast's world. So here, I used a light grey. It both plays double duty as being the same "color" as the boy's hair but also, because the actual colors around it, it will look whiter than it actually is.
For the gradient, I could have used the gradient tool (which I may have tried, can't remember...), but it can be a bit unwieldy for a gradient pleb like me. That being said, I also like the more organic, imprecise texture created by painting and not the perfect calculation of the gradient tool
The last step was simple. I have a custom brush pack that has a lot of good stippling/mottling brushes. For that extra splotchy look, I used the same brush as the eraser and the brush.
