In pencil, you can just kinda scribble stuff, and as long as there are the basic shapes of what you're trying to create, it all makes sense. Somehow...

However, when you (or at least when I) try to use strong ink lines, you need to know what the true shape is. Originally while inking, I tried to do what I had first intended. The same ruffles lining the front of the Painter's dress should go on the hem, right? Honestly, I still think so, but I couldn't get it to work.

My second plan was to have the hem be lined with lace. It's fancy and delicate like the Painter, right? Right? Maybe in the hands of a better artist. It just looked a little silly. Not detailed enough. In retrospect, I could have just added little filigree and patterned holes and lace-y stuff to the section, but it didn't look good from afar. Scrapped.

My third and final plan was repeating the floral motif of her design and incorporating it into the design of her hem. There was no way I was going to do draw a fat load of roses(?) consistently, so I just drew one, copied it, and rotated them to make them look different. You'd be amazed how easy to make clones look like different entities. In addition to the rotation, I would have to clean up any overlap with white/erasing, and then the shading that would follow later would be individual to each flower. Cool beans.
