I have no earthly idea as to why I never tried to seriously utilize the navigator earlier on. It's so useful! And it looks cool!
Basically, the navigator lets you see the image from afar and also lets you see your zoom level. Aside from being an additional and sometimes easier way to navigate (imagine that) around the picture, it serves an artistic purpose. Being able to see your picture at a distance is crucial for managing proportions, gauging the overall balance of elements, and seeing how your work will likely appear to an actual audience.
I touched on this in a previous WIP. Looking at your work at different levels of closeness is essential to inspiring structural fidelity in the elements of your work. BUT! It's important to know that what you see up close may not appear far away. You can, in fact, leave them the way they are. I brought up that in the aforementioned post to some extent, too, but I'll expand on this a touch here. It's one thing to recognize that things may appear better than they do up close. It's another thing to use it to your advantage. Learn to recognize what flaws will translate to a far away or passing glance. One should do what they can to fix any problems that will register with the audience. And with those that won't register, certainly pay them attention but don't lose time over them. Obviously, context is important to decide what's what, but that's a something you'll have to figure out. And with this tool, you'll likely find that much easier than without. That's the beauty of the navigator.
Or maybe just 'cause it looks cool, I dunno.
