It's not like I have a lot of them done as I type this, but this is one of my favorite piece so far. Part of it is the slightly tinged eyeballs, but it's mostly about the expression. That kind of vacant expectation. When I was younger, I used to really dislike the face this was based on, but now, while it's not my favorite, it's certainly one I have a soft spot for. There's a somewhat off but harmless oddness to the original face that I hope I was able to capture here. Also, the color scheme is nice, I guess.
Hmm. One of the challenges with this series was the faces, more specifically their expressions. Because of how cartoony the characters are, it just seemed appropriate to make their expressions... expressive. There needed to be some form of thought, some emotion, or some sense of personality come through their faces. But if you look at most of the face styles, you'll notice that they lack one of, if not the, most expressive part of the human face: the eyebrows. In addition, you'll see that their eyes are locked in one direction, and I wanted to honor that to an extent, i.e. this boy here had slightly crossed, front-facing eyes in his original depiction. The characters' ability to emote and express fell to the mouth and body language. Generally, anyway. I kinda cheated on a handful of them and let the hairless brow part of the eyebrow region double as the eyebrow. Eyebrow eyebrow eyebrow.
